Identifying Commercial HVAC Problems

Sep 28th 2016

Problems with Heating, Ventilation, & Air Conditioning (HVAC) can be costly for building owners and cause conditions within the building to become inhospitable for residents and businesses. It’s no surprise that HVAC problems are fear-inducing and often get ignored until the problem reaches critical mass. Since many building owners do not know what to look (or listen) for in HVAC problems that do not involve the building’s temperature, many get left to get better on their own - and rarely do.

These common indicators that have nothing to do with temperature can point to a problem with your HVAC that should be checked right away:

Something Smells

A smell in the building is usually a good sign that your HVAC needs to be checked out. Often times a smell is a sign of an inexpensive or simple fix issue, such as changing a filter or dusting coils. These may be difficult to find or service for the untrained professional, so reach out to a technician to get this looked at. If it is a simple problem, we advise asking the tech to show you where your coils and filter are so that you can do that preventative maintenance on your own.

Odd Noises From HVAC

HVAC, when working properly, is typically very quiet. If you are hearing noises, especially notably different noises, from your HVAC, then you should definitely get your HVAC checked immediately. Noises can indicate many different issues to HVAC professionals, some are small and others are major. Either way, it is typically much more cost effective to get these issues looked at sooner than later. Unfortunately, odd noises can often be indicators of deeper issues within your unit, and can therefore be very costly if left unchecked.

Sudden Spike In Energy Cost

A sudden unexplained spike in energy costs can be a sign that your HVAC system is working harder than it should be, and will likely begin showing other symptoms of a large problem soon. This early form of detection can be useful for the keen building owner in seeking a diagnosis on the problem before it manifests in damaging ways.
